The institution known today as Altierus Career Colleges was founded as Fort Lauderdale College of Business and Finance in 1940. In 1976, the College was renamed Fort Lauderdale College. The school's name was then changed to Florida Metropolitan University, then Everest University, before its ultimate name change to Altierus Career Colleges.
Owned for many years by Corinthian Colleges, Altierus Career Colleges was recently acquired by Zenith Education Group. Many online schools offer career services. However, Altierus offers comprehensive career services including everything from career planning and testing, to help with résumés and cover letters, to interviewing techniques, references and salary negotiations. Having a national network of Altierus alumni and an extensive database of job listings from which to choose also provides advantages to Altierus students. Offering comprehensive services and having access to opportunities nationwide is important because students are taking courses from the comfort of their own home.
Cost to attend
The final cost of attendance depends on many factors, including the program chosen and the student's living situation. For example, based on data from the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES) in academic year 2013-2014, a student earning a bachelor's degree in accounting can expect to pay approximately $14,500 in tuition and an additional $1,500 in books and supplies. The cost for a master's degree in business administration during the 2013-2014 academic year was approximately the same.
Every student's cost of living will be unique to their own situation. However, one of the advantages to pursuing an online degree is the ability to live at home or with roommates to cut down costs. Additionally, with 24/7 access to course content, many individuals are able to work full-time while pursuing their degrees online.
As part of Altierus' financial literacy program, they have teamed up with Solutions. The Solutions service is provided by Zenith's nonprofit parent, Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC). Students are also encouraged to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and seek out federal and state aid for which they are eligible.
Altierus accepts transfer credit meeting its criteria for those who would like to apply credits they have already earned toward their Altierus Career Colleges degree. In addition, Altierus offers a variety of scholarships. These include merit, need-based, career-specific and institutional opportunities. Of course, beyond these common forms of financial aid, many thousands of external scholarship opportunities exist. Students are encouraged to be proactive in seeking out scholarships or other forms of aid relevant to their situation and degree.
