School history

From the beginning of its history, Colorado Technical University has focused on supplying their students with industry-relevant technological degrees. Opening its doors in 1965 as the Colorado Electronic Training Center, the school was originally located in a building formerly used as a roller rink. The school now boasts two traditional campuses, CTU Colorado Springs and CTU Aurora, as well as a robust online degree program.

The Colorado Electronic Training center became Colorado Technical College and adapted its curricula to meet the needs of the local aerospace and military based economy throughout the 1970s. Anticipating the impact technology would have across a broad range of industries, the school planned their curricula to continue producing highly-skilled graduates. Upon offering their first doctoral degree programs in 1995, the school again changed its name to Colorado Technical University. CTU was a pioneer in online education, offering its first online bachelor's degree programs during the 2003-04 school year.

Cost to attend

Colorado Technical University publishes tuition information for their various degree programs. Tuition costs as of March 2015 are listed below.

  • Undergraduate degree students - $325 per credit hour (+ $150 graduation fee)
  • Master's degree students - $585 per credit hour (+ $200 graduation fee)
  • Doctoral degree students - $598 per credit hour (+ 200 graduation fee)

CTU offers a separate tuition schedule for active duty military personnel. As of March 2015, those tuition fees are as follows:

  • Associate and bachelor's degree Students - $210 per credit hour
  • Master's degree Students - $460 per credit hour
  • Doctoral degree Students - $540 per credit hour

There is an additional "course materials charge" for military students of $40 per term. However, that charge is waived for military students after the add/drop period has passed, resulting in no net charge to the student.

Additionally, CTU offers a "fast track" program which allows students to save money on tuition on specific associate and bachelor's degree courses.

Financial aid

Numerous opportunities are available for students who're seeking financial aid to attend Colorado Technical University's traditional or online degree programs. Potential students are encouraged to obtain and complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form in order to determine their eligibility and need. CTU also has a number of grants and scholarships available, including the ones we've listed below:

  • Advantage Grant -- This grant is designed to help with tuition costs for students who are experiencing extreme personal or financial hardships. Applicants must be accepted for admission and complete a 500-word essay.
  • Career Education Scholarship Fund (CESF) -- The fund provides scholarships to full-time students attending a school owned by the Career Education Corporation. These scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 and are awarded based on need.
  • CTU Corporate Educational Alliances Grant -- This grant assists with tuition costs for employees of member institutions of the Corporate Educational Alliance, as well as with tuition for their immediate family members.
  • CTU Higher Education Alliances Grant -- Designed to help graduates of institutions with which CTU has higher education alliances, candidates must be accepted for admission to CTU and complete the Educational Alliances Attestation form.
  • Graduate Project Management Scholarship -- This $2,000 scholarship is available to students enrolled in CTU's online master's degree program with a concentration on Project Management. Applicants must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA or greater to be eligible.
  • Homeland Security Grant -- Master of Science in Homeland Security students are eligible to apply for this one-time, $5,000 grant. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay and a letter of recommendation from their employer supporting their expertise in Homeland Security.
  • Lifelong Learning Grant -- Intended for Colorado Technical University Alumni who wish to pursue another CTU degree, the award amount is dependent upon the student's former educational experience. Alumni who have completed an undergraduate program and are currently enrolled in a graduate program are eligible for an award of $2,000. Those alumni who have already completed a graduate program and are pursuing an additional graduate degree from CTU are eligible for $500.
  • Wounded Warrior Scholarship -- In partnership with the Yellow Ribbon Fund, Inc., Colorado Technical University offers scholarships to wounded service members and their spouses. Up to 25 service members and 25 spouses recovering at selected Warrior Transition Units will be chosen annually. The scholarship covers the full cost of online tuition, books, course materials and a laptop.

Online offerings

Colorado Technical University has been offering online degree programs for more than a decade. Students have the opportunity to take 102 of CTU's 115 degree programs in a completely Web-based format. With two physical campus locations, students also have the option to complete their degree through either a traditional or hybrid approach. Online undergraduate programs include degrees in accounting, business, criminal justice, healthcare management, information technology, nursing, psychology, project management and software systems among others. CTU offers award winning graduate degree programs in business administration, computer information technology, criminal justice, as well as advanced degrees in project management, engineering, health care and a number of other fields.

With 115 degree programs to date, Colorado Technical University offers a wide variety of specializations from which to choose. Here are some of the university's most popular programs.

Master of Science in Information Technology

Colorado Technical University's online Master of Science in Information Technology is designed to help graduates acquire the technical and strategic leadership skills they will need to design, build and manage IT systems and programs to meet the business goals of today and the future. With core courses in strategic management, project management, systems security management, enterprise system architecture, network infrastructure management and enterprise data management technology, the program examines the challenges that enterprises face and essential IT solutions that can be used to meet those challenges.

In order to allow students room for more focused study, CTU offers four specializations within its IT master's degree program. These specializations include network management, project management, security management, as well as a general information technology specialization.

Master of Science in Criminal Justice

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice program at Colorado Technical University has been developed for students seeking the skills and knowledge base needed to pursue careers in law enforcement, corrections and the criminal court system. Students will obtain policy development and decision making skills through courses in leadership, criminology, terrorism and Homeland Security management and public policy among others. The degree will also prepare graduates for roles in leadership and education in the criminal justice field.

Students who enroll in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program may choose from either the Homeland Security or a General Concentration track.

Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security

For students considering careers in computer and technological security, Colorado Technical University offers a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security. This program is designed to prepare graduates to investigate and aid in the prosecution of computer crimes through properly recovering and seizing computer evidence. The program has been certified by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) and has an affiliation with the National Security Agency (NSA).

The school offers two areas of concentration in cyber security that may be beneficial to students. These concentrations include computer systems security and information assurance.

Colorado Technical University provides information regarding student demographics to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the Institute for Education Sciences. As of autumn 2013, CTU's total online enrollment stood at 20,826 students, with 18,061 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and 2,765 graduate students, respectively.
