Where Is the Best Place to Study When You “Study?”
Online Education at Home, Work, Library, or Starbucks?
With online education, you can work and study from pretty much anywhere. As long as you have a connection, you have access (although broadband is preferable to dial-up). But is it better to study at home, work, or somewhere else? Let’s explore some of the pros and cons of each environment:
Online Education at Home
On the surface, your home makes the most sense. The whole point of online education is that you don’t have to commute anywhere. You’re already there most of the time, it’s familiar, and it’s comfortable. However, this comfort level can bring certain risks. With so many distractions (TV, your bed, family, etc), it’s sometimes difficult to get motivated. It helps to get dressed for class even if you plan on staying home at your computer.
Online Education at Work
Studying at the office has both benefits and disadvantages. You’re already in “work/study mode,” and you don’t have to pay for your connection. But again, you might have distractions to deal with. And there’s also the “ethicality” of studying while on the job.
Online Education Anywhere Else
Many cafes, libraries, and restaurants offer free WiFi access for patrons. You can relax, drink, and socialize while working towards your degree. However, you also have to deal with security and speed issues. What do you do with your laptop and books when you go to the bathroom? And what if the free connection blocks certain programs (like chat)? There are also speed restrictions attached to certain WiFi packages.
At the end of the day, there is no “best” place to study. Where you do your work ultimately depends on personal preference and your particular study habits.
