Just What We Need – More Scientists

A bunch of business groups got together and decided that America is “losing” in the competitive world of business. What’s their solution – double the number of bachelor degrees in science, math, and engineering. Gee, way to think outside the box a little.

These majors are great and all, for those kind of people, but how about progressing a little here. Why not rethink the way we do competitive business and try to get ahead of the market using some different methods or policies? Or better yet – let’s try to envision a new way of doing global business! Instead of either I win or you win, why aren’t some of the global leaders trying to actually figure out what’s best for the global economy?

They even went so far as to pass a Congressional act called “The America Competes Act.” Basically, it just says that math and science are great and should be promoted in higher education.

Think about this: what if we all took classes in leadership, sustainability, critical analysis skills, entrepreneurship, and other schools of thought that develop how we see the big picture? We actually might develop the skill to look at more than one side as the correct answer! Or maybe even realize on a highly intellectual plane that no correct answers are necessary – most of the issues of the world are too complex to need to be right. So count the rest of us out just because we don’t have a science degree – we might pass you in the final race after all.
