Graduate on Time – Summer School Can Help

If you’re one of those students who wants to actually graduate before your hair turns grey, summer school can help speed you through the system. These days, it can take at least five years to earn a four-year degree at a large, state-funded university. Why do I want to accrue more loans taking pottery when I should be starting coursework in my major?

Yes, we all know that general education courses are valuable in their own way. But it’s hard to imagine why I need to take a math 100 level when I’m majoring in Philosophy. So, summer school is a great option for me – especially summer school online. I can live at home, keep my job, and study at my own convenience.

I’ve also thought about taking some time off to earn some elective credits at an accredited outdoor adventure program. Or I could enroll at a local community college and earn some coursework, too.

All in all, most of us think of summer as time to earn extra money and take a few road trips. But if you think of all the cash you’ll be saving by not enrolling in college for an extra semester or two, summer school might be your best option.

  1. I think that an outdoor leadership program would be one of the coolest ways to spend a summer. Outdoors, usually in beautiful places, challenging myself, staying in shape AND getting college credit for it!? Sounds awesome!

  2. I completed a semester’s worth of classes the summer before my senior year and took two classes during a two-week “winter session” at my university to graduate on time. It’s ridiculous that 4-year universities take five years to graduate from.

  3. I have both taken and taught summer sessions in college and find them much more relaxed than the rest of the schoolyear. Perhaps it’s the weather and the flexible schedule, who knows. Regardless, summer is a great time to get ahead of the game.
