Choose Your Own Adventure
That’s right – some colleges actually allow you to create your own major. For some students, this idea is horrifying – they find it hard enough to pick a major from a list, much less come up with their own idea of one.
But for others, the freedom of Interdisciplinary Studies means unlimited choices of what you can officially earn your degree in. Plus, enough variety for those easily-bored students who tend to think courses like statistics are about as exciting as candle making.
Found at some small private colleges, universities, and online schools, an Interdisciplinary Studies program allows you to kind of pick and choose what courses and departments are the most interesting to you. It usually attracts outside-the-box students with a variety of different interests – and keeps them intrigued by the selection as well as provides a springboard for mulitple careers. Some employers prefer to hire college graduates who are versatile enough to work in many different areas (plus it gives more job security when you’re valued by more than one department within the company).
You can choose something as simple as combining Photography and English to make you own Photojournalism major – or you can actually major in Interdisciplinary Studies and take courses within any of the pre-approved departments.
If you’ve been avoiding college because you can’t figure out what in the world you want to do – think about doing everything!
