Bill and Melinda Disagree
At least, they disagree with my blog post last week. The Gates Foundation is now actually funding a program that encourages high school graduates to be prepared to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Okay, okay, maybe I was a little harsh on the scientists last week.
On paper, the Business Higher Education Forum actually appears to have some credible ideas. As we all know, the Gates Foundation prioritizes literacy and education. Even with their work on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, their programs are based first on education. And that’s a hard one to argue: it’s unquestionable that education leads to a stronger global community. Bill and Melinda just happen to have the funding and the passion that helps prove this point.
Now, the Foundation is taking it one step further with their funding – looking at education within the U.S. It’s unfortunate that many high school graduates do not have the opportunity, confidence, resources, or skills to attend college or university. BHEF basically focuses on building programs for high schools to provide opportunity and education in science, technology, engineering, and math before they graduate – not only educating but empowering them to go on to higher education.
It’s sometimes hard to get the idea out that there really is a college or university out there for anyone! Now, with online schools and community colleges that offer both degrees and certificate programs, you don’t have to quit your job to pursue higher education. And, let’s face it, the world is a better place when we’re all a little more knowledgeable.
