It’s really happening. I’ve been tracking it for a while, but the numbers are rolling in: students are flocking to green programs. Both online and on-campus, students are seeking out greener educations. While there are a few doubters around still, it’s become apparent that the planet needs a little bit more TLC. Let’s take a look at the push to go green. (more…)
I’m going to cut to it on this one: men are raping women. Just saying that it’s wrong doesn’t do this topic justice. It’s inhuman. It’s cruel. It’s quite possibly the worst thing that one human being can do to another. Yet, it’s happening everywhere. According to the U.S. Justice Department, one in five women are raped during a five-year college career. (more…)
People love rating things. I spend a lot of time outdoors putting various bits of gear through their paces, and when something impresses–or spooks–me, I review the product like a maniac. When it’s time to buy new gear, I tear through customer reviews, blogs, and discussion groups to find out all I can about the product I’m considering. I feel that these actions make a responsible consumer. Education is not cheap, no matter your route, and Unigo.com is letting people rate institutions of higher learning. It’s about time somebody organized this! (more…)
It’s been an interesting time for me lately. I’m thinking about the future, well, at least about my future. While I am rather excited to see how things will turn out for the country and the planet, I’ve been a bit less globally minded than that lately. Is it time for a new career? Is it time to go back to school? Whatever time it is, the questions have been keeping me up, so let’s think them out a little. (more…)
Online education has it’s benefits: low cost, no commute, flexible schedule, and the oft-mentioned others. There’s one topic that I’d not yet considered: germs. There’s a bug going around here, and, unfortunately, I ended up with it. Like many of my friends and a few of colleagues, the thoughts occupying my mind for the past few days have been feverish, cloudy, and focused on getting better ASAP. It occurred to me that online education rather changes the school-and-sickness relationship. (more…)
I wasn’t eavesdropping per se; at least, it didn’t start off that way. I was just minding my own, drinking my coffee, and generally avoiding doing any real work at a local coffee shop. That’s when the complainer got his full speaking voice, and–really–everyone in the café had to listen because this guy was trumpeting. His complaint? He felt that his online courses were too demanding, and he kept using the phrase: it’s just on online English course. (more…)
Since September, when the economy really started to slide, we’ve heard the rumblings. Rumors of layoffs turn into reality. Jobs are drying up, and the number of qualified people running around without work is growing by the day. Panic never helps, though, and many are using their new-found free time to head back to school. (more…)
Loans are, thanks to the recent credit crunch, rather difficult to obtain of late. Private lenders have been given the gift of a bailout, but how much has this helped? Getting up to your eyes in debt is never a good idea, but a loan now and again really does help. Scholarships and grants are down, so it looks like loans are going to have to pick up the slack. (more…)
Tuition is going up. Funding is going down. Competition for funding is going up. Don’t be down, though. Get up, and make yourself the best candidate. You can still get a full-ride, but you’re going to have to work harder than ever. (more…)
