Walden University is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the launch of the Walden Service Network. The Walden Service Network is a free online tool that allows members of the Walden community to recruit volunteers, find community service opportunities, and record service hours.
The president of Walden University, Jonathan Kaplan, is eager to see the Walden Service Network in action. "I cannot imagine a more rewarding way to honor the founding of Walden 40 years ago than by living out our mission of positive social change through volunteerism," Kaplan said. "I'm putting forth a challenge to have 10,000 registered members in the Walden Service Network who each perform and record a total of 40 volunteer hours by the end of 2010."
If the Walden University community answers the president's challenge, it will contribute 400,000 service hours to those in need this year. Members of the Walden community who volunteer approximately four hours per month will increase the school's already impressive volunteer efforts.
Expanding the Reach of the Walden University Community
Walden University students, alumni, and staff have a history of volunteerism, and the Walden Service Network can increase their individual efforts by providing visibility and connections. Community members can use the network to find volunteer opportunities based on issue, social group, and location, which means there is never a shortage of ways to help. The Walden Service Network will also help support Walden University's Global Day of Service each fall.
Walden University members working for nonprofit agencies, faith-based organizations, schools, and other community associations may use the Walden Service Network to recruit volunteers and broaden their efforts. From working at food banks to tutoring at nearby schools, the members of the Walden community will expand their reach by participating in the Walden Service Network.
