Diploma Programs at University Canada West Academies
The most recent addition to the diploma programs at University Canada West Academies is the practical nurse training, which starts its first classes in November of 2009. In this 51-week program, you learn anatomy and physiology, health, healing, and the nursing arts. This program provides the valuable opportunity to participate in three practicums, one in an acute care setting, one in a community-based location, and the third working with older adults (gerontology). This work prepares you for a preceptorship, when you start to make the transition from student to practical nurse.
The other nursing diploma program at University Canada West is the resident care attendant program. This 27-week course prepares you to work as an aide in intermediate or extended care facilities. Graduates or this program are eligible to apply for jobs in these facilities, as well as assist patients who are living at home.
Students training in the social services program learn to work in the community and help people deal with many problems, from family violence, drug and alcohol abuse and aging, to mental health issues. In these programs, you learn how to help families in crisis through a wide range of problems, including violence and addition. These programs include experience in a clinical setting before you graduate.
If you are interested in the business side of healthcare, the healthcare administration programs can prepare you for work in a medical or dental office. Graduates are prepared to work as receptionists, intake clerks and other similar jobs. In addition to general office skills, you learn about office tasks specific to medical or dental offices.
Students in the medical office assistant program have 32 weeks to learn how to work in both the front and back of a doctor's office or emergency room. This is a fast-paced course, with classroom and real-world training that prepares students to be working in the medical field.
