Study for a career in telecommunications

In our expanding global marketplace, consumers reward companies that move swiftly to solve their problems. Telecommunications professionals make their companies more efficient by understanding the needs of their customers and leveraging technology to meet those needs more effectively than the competition.

Telecommunications majors study two distinct areas of technology and business. First, telecommunications students learn to understand the hardware and software that keep information flowing freely. Many telecommunications programs expose their students to courses in software programming and hardware engineering.

Second, telecommunications majors learn how to use that technology to get that information across. Students learn how to replace inefficient cross-country business trips with effective multi-media conferences. They discover how a simple tool like a bar code scanner can shave days off the time it takes to ship a customer order from one coast to the other.

Telecommunication students combine these specific skills with general courses designed to stimulate their business acumen and their critical thinking. Armed with a degree in telecommunications, an experienced manager can earn a salary of $85,000 or more at a major company, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Regardless of their field of expertise, professionals can reinvigorate their careers by pursuing part-time telecommunications degrees.

Online Telecommunications Degree Programs

While telecommunications technology used to consist of only telephone, television, video, and fax, today the industry has blossomed to include cell phones, DVDs, digital cable, and the Internet. Well-trained telecom technology experts are needed to keep up with the industry's innovations.

Online Degrees Offer Career Training for the Digital Age

One of the newer telecommunications technologies, the Internet, offers students the convenient option of earning online degrees from their own homes on their own schedules. Telecom degrees are available at the associate and bachelor's levels. Typical coursework includes marketing, computer and information systems, customer relations, and project management. Once you earn your degree, you will have the skills to work in many areas of the field, including installation and maintenance, administration, sales, and customer service. With a bachelor's degree in telecommunications engineering, you can find entry-level work as an electronic or electrical engineer.

Telecommunications Technology Salaries

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the telecommunications industry is very profitable, with average salaries much higher than other industries'. The BLS reports that average weekly earnings in telecommunications in 2006 were $963. The most job growth is expected in telecommunications technology sales, where median hourly wages for 2006 were $23.13.

"If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take,
their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."
