Online Degrees in Information Science

A degree in information science is the gateway to a variety of careers in the computer field. Computer information science degrees provide a broad-based education to those seeking either entry-level jobs or advancement in the field. Programs in this field stress technical skills, practical experience, and business concepts.

Whether obtaining a bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or a certificate, you will learn computer networking, programming, various operating systems, and telecommunications. Computer system design, hardware, software, data management, and web design are also covered in most programs.

A degree or certificate in information science can help you build a career as a computer scientist, computer programmer, computer system analyst, or database administrator. Additional possibilities include computer technician, Internet service provider support, and network technician. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "programmers are employed in almost every industry, but the largest concentration is in computer systems design and related services. Large numbers of programmers also work for telecommunications companies, software publishers, financial institutions, insurance carriers, educational institutions, and government agencies." The median salary for computer programmers in 2004 was $62,890.

Although completion of a program does not guarantee a specific job or salary, it can prepare you to be competitive in the computer job market.
