Saint Joseph's College of Maine is a liberal arts college for people of all faiths and all ages. Founded in 1912 by the Sisters of Mercy, the institution has a long history of providing education to adult students through distance learning. The Division of Graduate & Professional Studies was established in 1976 to provide a quality college education for working adults who sought an alternative to traditional on-campus study.

Distance learning at Saint Joseph's College of Maine
Currently, approximately 4,400 students from all 50 states and 20 countries worldwide are currently active in distance learning courses through Saint Joseph's College, enrolled in programs such as business, education, health care administration, IT management, liberal studies and nursing. Nearly 1,000 undergraduate students study at the College's 331-acre campus on Sebago Lake in Southern Maine.

The faculty, administration, and staff are devoted to providing a caring and supportive environment for you as an adult learner. An admissions counselor guides you through the application and enrollment process by assessing your personal goals, reviewing your previous education and work experience for possible credit transfer, and helping you determine the best educational program to meet your needs. Once enrolled, your personal academic advisor assists you in fulfilling your educational goals by providing helpful information and guidance through every course. When completing your course work, you will learn from instructors on a one-on-one tutorial basis, as they teach courses designed to capture your strengths and prepare you for new opportunities.

Student Services at Saint Joseph's College
Despite our geographic span, you will receive the same high level of student services that the students receive who are studying and living on our campus in Maine. At Saint Joseph's College of Maine and the Division of Graduate & Professional Studies, the focus is on you as an adult learner. Career counseling, extensive library services (including access to full text online databases), and our bookstore are easily accessible from a distance. Your personal academic advisor assists you in fulfilling your educational goals by providing helpful information and guidance through every course. Faculty work with each student in a one-on-one tutorial basis and are only a phone call or email away.

Assistance in basic aspects of writing (e.g., constructing sentences, paragraphing, structuring an essay, and presenting supporting data) is available to students who request tutoring or who demonstrate such needs in their written work. The student and tutor work together to evaluate needs and to plan appropriate actions. The program is free of cost except for rare occasions when additional texts or materials may be required.

Military Personnel at Saint Joseph's College
Flexibility and portability are essential for those serving in the military; it's also a good way to describe distance learning through Saint Joseph's College. We help active-duty personnel and military veterans, as well as their families, meet their educational goals with our programs. As a member of SOC (Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges), Saint Joseph's College awards the maximum credit for military training, and courses easily transfer to other SOC institutions. Saint Joseph's College also participates in several programs specifically geared to military audiences, such as eArmyU, Troops to Teachers, and Navy Partners.

Tuition Installment Plan: extend your tuition expenses over the term of your course(s) interest-free.

Federal financial aid is also available for students enrolled in degree programs.

Admission Requirements
For all undergraduate programs, prospective students must have HS diploma or GED. For all graduate programs, prospective students must have bachelor's degree.

Some programs may have additional admission requirements.

In most cases, you can use your previously-earned college credits toward your degree requirements as long as they were earned from a regionally accredited college or university.

Credit may also be awarded for military training, CLEP examinations, and work-based education programs.

The maximum number of credits that may be awarded by transfer/portfolio process is:

  • Graduate degree - 6 credits
  • Baccalaureate degree - 89 credits
  • Associate degree - 42 credits
  • Certificate - 6 credits

The remaining credits necessary for each program must be earned through Saint Joseph's College.

Summer Session

Students may accelerate their degree completion by attending our one of our 10-day summer sessions at the College's lakeside campus in Maine.

The summer session is typically comprised of two courses of 3 semester-hour credits each, so students earn 6 credits in only 10 days.
