St. Xavier University
Founded in 1846, Saint Xavier University has been experiencing a period of growth in recent years. Today the college serves approximately 5,700 students at its various locations. The university continues to grow, having added eight new facilities since 2001 and increasing its undergraduate enrollment by 11 percent since 2003. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Saint Xavier University is a private, independent Catholic university. It is also the oldest Catholic university in Chicago. Though its roots are Catholic, the college welcomes students of any faith or background, and today the university is committed to encouraging a diverse student population. In fact, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Saint Xavier University in the top five most diverse colleges in the Midwest.
Saint Xavier University: An Exceptional Experience
Over the years, Saint Xavier University has distinguished itself through achievements and accolades. U.S. News & World Report included the college in its list of America's Best Colleges 2009. It was named among the 40 best master's universities in the Midwest. The university's prestige was confirmed when U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan appeared as a guest lecturer at the university in September 2009.
The college's graduate school provides the second largest number of teachers to the Illinois school system. In Chicago alone, teachers with degrees from Saint Xavier University are estimated to teach 174,000 school children every day.
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley formally commended Saint Xavier University in September 2009 for its efforts in becoming a green campus. The college maintains a program called "GreenBike Share" which offers students the opportunity to borrow bicycles. The university is the first in Illinois and among just 11 in the country to build two buildings earning the Gold certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The college offers tours two times per day, as well as once on Saturdays. Financial aid assistance is also provided, with 94 percent of undergraduate students at Saint Xavier University receiving some kind of financial aid.
At Saint Xavier University, your education doesn't end with the classroom. Saint Xavier University offers more than 30 student organizations that you have the opportunity to join based on your interests. Additionally, there are opportunities to study abroad. Saint Xavier University students have studied in 15 different countries.
The university has 12 athletic teams in football, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, and soccer. Nine of these, which include both men's and women's teams, are qualified for national tournaments.
