Founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, SXU is Chicago’s oldest Catholic University, and it is recognized as one of the top 40 comprehensive master’s universities in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2011.

  • The School of Nursing has been designated as a Center of Excellence by the National League of Nursing for a second consecutive three-year term, effective through 2013. SXU is among one of only 19 nursing programs in the country that have been awarded this prominent designation.

  • SXU holds regional accreditation (the highest level of accreditation for institutions of higher education) from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • SXU is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).
  • The School of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
  • The School of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
