Students from all over the world train at Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. to become an employable pilot in as little as ten months. Depending on the course of study you choose, your flight training will provide you with the knowledge to:

  • Fly among mountains
  • Fly at night
  • Operate a light piston aircraft or a multi-engine aircraft
  • Conduct emergency maneuvers and aerobatics
  • Understand high-tech aircraft instrumentation

The Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. Experience

Class size is kept to no more than a dozen students to ensure that you receive individual attention. Faculty members have flown such aircraft as military fighter jets, aerobatic planes, large transport category aircraft, and Boeing 747-400 jets, as well as smaller craft.

The school's location will enable you to utilize nearby airport training areas and runways while providing great training access to uncrowded airspace among vineyards, bodies of water, and mountainous terrain.

There are several different ratings courses available at Southern Skies Aviation Ltd., allowing you to choose a program that's just right for you depending on your interests and requirements. An instrument rating, for example, is necessary to work for an airline. You can work on most courses, licenses, and ratings on a full-time or part-time basis. The exception is the ten-month integrated commercial course (ICC), which is offered once a year, in September. Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. maintains a residence on its premises for students.

Program Admission Requirements

You do not need any previous flying experience to train at Southern Skies Aviation Ltd., and you can begin training at a young age, taking your first solo flight as young as fourteen. Only those who are seventeen and older, however, may receive a private pilot license.

You must either be a legal citizen of Canada or legally admitted into Canada to study at Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. Foreign students must present a study visa that allows them to study in Canada for more than six months.

A medical examination with an aviation medical examiner approved by Transport Canada must also be conducted to obtain a Transport Canada Category 1 or 3 aviation medical certificate. The Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. Web site provides a list of approved medical examiners.

Becoming a Pilot with Southern Skies Aviation Ltd.

In Canada, you must have a recreational permit (RP) or private pilots license (PPL) to fly recreationally. The recreational permit only allows you to fly with one passenger. You must also abide by visual flight rules (VFR), which means that you can only fly when the weather is fair.

Students who go on to obtain a private pilots license often continue with their training until they are qualified to obtain a commercial pilots license (CPL.) With a CPL, you can become a professional pilot. The PPL allows you to fly a single engine, non-high performance plane, and you are not allowed to receive money for piloting an aircraft. You must obtain a PPL before you can obtain a CPL.

Southern Skies Aviation, Ltd. can help you prepare for a career as a pilot. Upon your graduation from Southern Skies Aviation, Ltd., you can become a commercial pilot for an airline or freight company, or even a flight instructor. The latter requires an instructor rating. You can even train other pilots while continuing your own training and accumulating the flight hours necessary for certain permits and licensures.

Southern Skies Aviation Ltd. prides itself on offering training that combines military discipline with airline safety.
