The Facts about the Science of Chemistry

Chemistry, the study of molecules and their reactions, properties, and structure, is a fascinating field with a vast array of career options. Within the field of chemistry, there are many different areas for specialization, including materials, inorganic, organic, environmental, nanoscience, physical, and biological chemistry. A bachelor's degree in chemistry typically takes four years to complete. Undergraduate degree programs consist of fundamental chemistry courses as well as classes in mathematics, biology, and physics. Expect to enroll in lectures and attend hands-on labs. Master's degrees and PhD programs also include lab time, and tend to have heavy research components.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average salary of chemists with bachelor degrees in 2006 was $59,000. Those with master's and PhD degrees tended to earn more. Of course, these salaries are not guaranteed and vary based on location and area of specialization, but an accredited degree is generally required to work in the chemical industry and in research and development departments.

What to Do with Your Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry

With a bachelor's degree in chemistry, you can qualify for entry-level positions in the chemical industry and teaching positions in high school-level chemistry classes. Research positions at larger pharmaceutical or biotechnology firms or at a university often require a master's or PhD degree in chemistry. Jobs in these fields are predicted to keep growing at a 9 percent rate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because it can be applied to so many issues, like drug development or biochemical research, chemistry research is likely to attract continued research funding.

Of course, you do not need to apply your chemistry degree directly to chemistry research. People with degrees in chemistry and some other career training can enter fields such as medicine, agriculture, or pharmaceuticals.
