You don't have to want to be a lawyer to benefit from studying the law. Today's law firms rely heavily on paralegals who have legal knowledge and skills that allow them to perform essential duties. In addition, combining a legal studies minor with a bachelor's degree in business can be a smart way to position yourself to become an invaluable resource in any office.

Typically, paralegals are responsible for doing research and case preparation on behalf of the attorneys with whom they work. These tasks may include fact-checking, transcription and submitting required documentation. With a minor in legal studies and the proper certification, you can perform almost all the duties of an attorney except setting legal fees, giving legal advice and presenting a case in court.

While some paralegals choose to study in two year programs, pursuing a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in legal studies can maximize your employment prospects. Not only will you have the opportunity to work as a legal assistant, you can also apply for other jobs requiring business expertise.

More than 1,000 colleges, universities and trade schools offer formal paralegal degrees. Some may also offer an online minor in legal studies which can be an ideal option for busy adult learners. Of all the paralegal programs, approximately 260 have been approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). Although graduation from an ABA-approved program is not required to work as a paralegal, many employers look for this designation.

After graduation with a business degree and legal studies minor, you may be eligible to be certified as a paralegal. Certification is voluntarily but it can make you a more attractive candidate when applying for jobs. Paralegal certification can be obtained through any of the following organizations:

Employment and income for legal assistants

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for paralegals and legal assistants is bright. From 2008-2018, demand for these professionals is expected to increase by 28 percent. Approximately 71 percent of legal assistants are employed by private law firms while most of the remainder are employed by corporate legal departments and government agencies. Some legal aides also work as self-employed or freelance assistants.

Whether you choose a traditional program or elect to pursue an online minor in legal studies, you should graduate with the skills needed to enter a fast growing and well-paying profession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated the mean annual income for paralegals in 2009 as $50,080. However, wages for top earners were approximately $75,700.

Actual incomes can vary greatly depending on education and certification. For example, a bachelor's degree in business along with a minor in legal studies and paralegal certification can make you an ideal job candidate. As more businesses are looking to cut costs, individuals who bring a variety of skills to a company are increasingly sought after.
