Network Administration & Computer Networking Associate Degrees

With an associate's degree in network administration or computer networking, you will gain access to a monstrously-growing field. Why monstrous? Simply put, as a society, we have become completely dependent upon computers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2004 there were nearly 800,000 people working as computer support specialists and systems/network administrators, with more growth projected. Network administrators, especially, are going to be in demand, with an expected employment growth exceeding 26 percent by 2014.

Through an online associate program in network administration or computer networking, you will learn skills needed in the field. These include how to develop and maintain networking systems, troubleshoot hardware and software problems, develop and maintain Web pages, and manage databases. Your degree will make you eligible to apply for jobs as a computer support specialist, network administrator, help-desk analyst, database manager, Internet manager, and others.

According to BLS, 2005 starting salaries for help-desk and technical support staff ranged from $26,250 to $53,750. For senior technical support specialists, the range was between $44,500 and $63,250. Network administrators received between $47,250 and $70,500. While no degree or program can guarantee any salary, the BLS specifies that job prospects in this field are best for college graduates with the most up-to-date technological know-how.
