North Pole Solo Project Timeline
April 2003
Concept, and decision to reach the North Pole solo and unsupported. All research, planning, and resources are gathered.
Sponsorship and fundraising activities were started immediately. These expeditions are not cheap, though Wave's expedition is one of the most frugal, coming in with a budget of $125,000.
May 2003
Training commences, and intensifies each week. By August, training will be a full-time job.
September 2003
To kickoff more intense training for the expedition, Wave will ride his bicycle solo across America, from San Diego, Calif. to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, approx. 2,700 miles.
October 2003
Media events; conclusion of cross-country bicycle ride, television and radio appearances, additional magazine and newspaper interviews. Media partnering with key sponsors.
November 2003
Wave will travel to Resolute Bay, northern Canada. This is a traditional training ground for polar explorers and this trip will allow Wave to test equipment and ensure that everything will work well before his expedition.
December 2003
Wave will begin his winter training segment, skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing in the Sierra Nevada mountains. He may also attempt a solo, winter ascent of Mt. Shasta, over 14,000 feet high.
February 2004
Expedition start is projected for late February 2004. Starting this early in the polar expedition season is difficult due to a lack of light. Initially, Wave will have only around 2 hours per day, but this will increase to 24 hours a day by the middle of March.
Expedition Milestones
During a polar expedition each latitude is considered a milestone.
Conclusion of the expedition will be when Wave reaches 90° North - the top of the world.
Expedition Conclusion
Projected date of completion: May 1, 2004 after approximately 60 days on ice.
Post Expedition
Media tour, speaking engagements, nationally and internationally - as scheduled.
