Man races Camels, prepares for North Pole
Benicia, CA - On Saturday, June 21, 2003 soon-to-be polar explorer Wave Vidmar will race in the 6th Annual Benicia Camel Races sponsored by the Benicia Historical Society in Benicia, California. Vidmar will race camels side-by-side in elimination races, vying for the winner's title.
What makes Vidmar unique for a seasoned 'camel jockey' is that he's in training for an upcoming historic solo expedition to the geographic North Pole, beginning late February 2004. He's the first American to attempt such a trek, and if he succeeds will be the third person in history to have completed this elusive goal.
Vidmar will walk, ski, and swim (yes swim!) over 600 miles to reach the North Pole from the Russian peninsula of Artichevsky. He also plans to attempt a solo South Pole expedition in Nov. 2004, and row across an ocean solo sometime that same year. In 2000 Vidmar rode his bicycle solo across America, some 2,690 miles, and will do so again as part of his polar training this coming September.
Vidmar is no stranger to camel racing, placing second two times in the 2001 Benicia Camel Races. When asked why he would do such a race, he smiles and quickly admits "How many times do you get to go Camel Racing?! It's fun, something different, why not?" Indeed, Vidmar seems to thrive on unique and challenging sports and activities.
Vidmar is currently a video artist, demoing and consulting to the digital video industry, he's written books on the subject, but soon his official job title will change to 'professional explorer'.
Equally important to Vidmar is that he is able to inspire others to seek out their own dreams, and expand their own capabilities and boundaries. "It all starts and ends in the mind" states Vidmar.
