
Financial Aid
A complete range of financial assistance programs from federal, state, institutional, and private agency sources are available to help you afford your educational goals. Mountain State University participates in Federal Title IV funding such as Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Federal Title IV funding such as Stafford guaranteed student loans. Many employers support their employee's continuing education through a variety of reimbursement programs. Most provide some percentage of tuition reimbursement up to 100%, plus, in some cases, books and other associated fees. Students should consult with their human resource office's training manager for details regarding their benefits and eligibility policies.
In addition, the courses of study at Mountain State University are approved for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
Financial Aid Programs
- Federal Pell Grant - Financial assistance awarded by the federal government on the basis of need, the award amount is determined by the Expected Family Contribution, cost of education, number of hours in which student is enrolled, and congressional funding levels.
- Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant - Based upon exceptional need. Preference is given to Pell Grant recipients. The amount of the award is determined by the amount of money allotted to Mountain State University by the federal government.
- WV Higher Education Grant - A grant administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Grant Program for eligible West Virginia residents. Eligibility is determined by WVHEG. Complete and return the FAFSA before March 1.
- Federal Stafford Loan - A loan program (not need based) in which parents can borrow from a bank or other lender. Repayment of principal and interest begins within sixty days of loan disbursement. Loan limit is the cost of education minus other aid.
Tuition & Fees
- Administration of Criminal Justice coursework: $210* per credit
- Mountain State University Challenge Examinations: $150 per test
- Independent study courses: $190 per credit
- Prior Learning Assessment credit: $50 per credit applied for
Credit for a student's prior learning is assessed on the student's prior training and life experiences. While a student may apply and pay for any number of credits, Mountain State University may not award all credits requested.
- Transfer of previously earned college credit: No Charge
Credit must have been earned at a regionally accredited college or university.
- Credit for POST Training: No Charge
Must be a minimum of 320 hours of training.
- College Credit earned through Standardized Examination Programs: Applicable test fees
Standardized examinations such as CLEP, DANTES and AP are offered at various sites across the country. There is no fee required for the transfer of previously earned college credit through testing.
The typical student with an Associate degree and POST training will participate in the 48-credit Administration of Criminal Justice professional courses at a cost of $10,080*, plus books and application fees.

Tuition Assistance Programs
Mountain State University recognizes that many agencies provide tuition assistance or reimbursement to their employees. To assist the student in applying for reimbursement or assistance from his or her agency, Mountain State University will supply the necessary documentation to support proof of payment for fees, tuition, and the cost of books.
