What is the Montgomery GI Bill--Selected Reserve?

The Montgomery GI Bill--Selected Reserve is a military education benefit established to assist eligible veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces Selected Reserve complete college degree programs or obtain job training. The program is available to veterans of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, the Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard.

Who is Eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill--Selected Reserve?

To be eligible for benefits as a veteran of the Selected Reserve forces, you must have at least a six-year agreement to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985. If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your initial obligation. You must have completed your initial training before being eligible for benefits, and you must remain in good standing with your unit. Additionally, you must have received a high school diploma or GED before completing your initial training.

What Benefits Does the Montgomery GI Bill--Selected Reserve Include?

The program will provide you with up to 36 months of military education benefits to further your education:

  • Online or on campus college courses
  • Certificate or correspondence classes
  • Independent study programs
  • Apprenticeship or on-the-job training
  • Vocational flight training
  • High tech training
  • Remedial courses in certain cases

Your benefits will be available for 14 years if you signed up for the Montgomery GI Bill--Selected Reserve after October 1, 1992. If you signed up before then, your benefits are available for ten years. If your unit is mobilized, your benefit eligibility will be extended for the period of time you were on active duty plus an additional four months.

You may apply for your education benefits online or through the mail by completing VA Form 22-1990 and returning it to your state's Veterans Affairs office. Please contact the Office of Veterans Affairs for more information and guidelines for this program.
