Teachers Get Respect
China is one country that truly celebrates Teachers Day. Every year, on September 10, The Chinese pay huge respect to their teachers - past and present. Chinese culture places very high value on age and wisdom, and the Chinese term for teacher literally translates to "old master."

A person doesn't have to be old to be an important teacher in Chinese society.

Treated like a King
"When I went to teach English in Taiwan, I was shocked at the degree of respect my students showed me," says a former English teacher in his 20s.

"I was younger than most of my students, and had less formal education than some of them, but with the title 'old master of English,' they treated me like a king."

Established by the government 19 years ago, it serves to remind society of the hard work and sacrifices so many people make for education.

The Greatest "Old Master"
Confucious is considered the greatest "old master." His teachings even impact other cultures - Western children learn the phrase "Confucious says . . ." and connect it with things considered to be wise.
