The Institute for Therapeutic Massage: A History of Growth

Founded in 1994 by Lisa Helbig, a licensed massage therapist, the Institute for Therapeutic Massage now operates multiple locations and enjoys professional educational relationships with area teaching hospitals and private medical centers. In 2008 the college moved to a new and expanded facility that offered classroom and clinic spaces as well as personal training facilities.

The college focused in its early years on developing a core program in massage therapy before branching out as it grew to offer more specialized programs and advanced skills. As massage therapy becomes more accepted in mainstream medical treatments, employment opportunities are expected to grow for professionally trained massage therapists. Additionally, some healthcare professionals are becoming increasingly interested in learning massage skills to better help their patients. The Institute for Therapeutic Massage includes hospital-based programs that focus on the use of massage in a medical setting for rehabilitation.
