While nurse, dental assistant, or phlebotomist are all possible health care careers, the type of work in this industry can go beyond helping patients in clinical settings. For example, individuals interested in the business side of health care can seek careers as health care administrators or other positions in the clerical, customer service and business side of healthcare. In this capacity they may work in insurance and billing, maintain patient records, oversee daily operations and more. Many administrators obtain bachelor's degree before entering the field and master's degrees are also common.

Additional specializations also exist for both nurses and health care administrators. For example, after working as a staff nurse, qualified individuals have the potential to obtain additional education and become advanced practitioners in fields such as nurse anesthesiologist, nurse midwife and nurse practitioner. Similarly, health care administrators may seek advanced degrees that focus on a particular area such as health information systems, hospital organization and management and more.

How are careers in health and medical services trending?

Opportunities in the health care field are expected to continue growing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an aging baby boomer population as well as the increased use of electronic medical records is expected to account for a marked increase in the need for medical assistants, dental assistants and administrators as well as other health care workers.

What can you do with a health and medical degree?

With a degree in a health care related field, a student has a wide variety of potential options. Depending on academic focus, a graduate can pursue work as nurse, a healthcare administrator, business administrator for a physician, paramedic, physical therapist, dental assistant, dental hygienist or other position.

Of course there are lucrative careers available in the health care field but positions within health care also offer the opportunity to help people when they most need it. Whether you work in geriatrics or pediatric dentistry, you have many options to positively influence the lives of others. You may insure that a patient's bill is correct, a doctor's bottom line is covered or a child gets the appropriate medicine.
