Home | Online Degree Programs | Health & Medical Degrees | Respiratory Therapy Degree Online Degrees in Respiratory TherapyRespiratory therapy refers to the evaluation and treatment of patients with breathing or lung disorders. Respiratory therapists usually work under the direction of a physician, and are responsible for a wide range of therapeutic treatments, and diagnostic procedures. Respiratory therapy is practiced on all types of patients, from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people who suffer from various lung and heart conditions.Students pursuing respiratory therapy should take courses in health, biology, mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Formal training is necessary for entry into this field; you can study at colleges and universities, medical schools, vocational-technical institutes, and the Armed Forces. After completing the relevant coursework, you can earn an associate's or bachelor's degree, which makes you eligible to work as an advanced respiratory therapist. Career prospects in respiratory therapy are quite favorable, especially for therapists with cardiopulmonary (heart-lung) skills or experience working with infants. In 2004, respiratory therapists earned $43,000 a year on average. Our Featured Education Partners: Penn Foster Schools
