Home | Online Degree Programs | Health & Medical Degrees | Health Services Degree Study for a career in health services, including health services management or administrationHealth services is a broad major that offers a wide range of career options in the health and medical field. A degree in health services provides students with basic health services instruction and typically allows them to choose where to concentrate their interests. Most health services majors concentrate on one aspect of health services, such as mental health or ambulatory care. Students with degrees in health services go on to become nurses, health services managers, and administrators. Many careers in health services have licensing requirements that must be met before beginning work. Most health care practitioners are required to be licensed either nationally or in the state in which they work. Nurses, for example, must be registered to practice in the United States. Registration requirements include successful completion of a national exam. Courses required to complete a degree in health services vary depending on the concentration. Anatomy and physiology, biology, and health care administration are common requirements. In 2004, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nurses made an average of $54,210 per year. Other health care practitioners averaged $57,310 annually. The same study projected that the demand for nurses will increase by 27.3% between 2002 and 2012, and the demand for other health care practitioners will increase by 25.9%.
