Through a ten-month intensive program, you learn the skills you need to become a professional photographer. The short but intensive nature of the training program at the Hallmark Institute of Photography means that the curriculum can be constantly adapted to changes in technology or industry standards.

The comprehensive education at the institute acknowledges that it is not enough for graduates to simply be prepared creatively. They must also be prepared to be successful business managers. Hallmark Institute of Photography's curriculum features a variety of primary courses of study, which focus on different aspects of the business, artistic, and technological side of photography.

At Hallmark Institute of Photography, preparing professional "image makers" starts with a diverse and dynamic learning environment that cultivates a respect for artistic expression, respectful discussion and critique, and hands-on learning.  The academically stimulating coursework is taught by like-minded instructors who share a passion and curiosity for learning and sharing through mentoring relationships.

While group learning in the classroom setting is an important component to the educational experience at Hallmark Institute of Photography, the development the individual student's gifts and skills is the primary goal.  With a commitment to producing high-caliber, professional photographers, the training program emphasizes the importance of ethical behavior, integrity, kindness and understanding.

Technology and the Classroom   

The world of photography and visual arts is deeply impacted by advances in digital technology.  For this reason, Hallmark Institute of Photography is committed to investing significant resources into updating photographic and digital equipment on an annual basis. 

Courses are taught in modern teaching facilities that combine industrial, open-space design elements and feature state-of-the-art technology, including: 

  • The Educational Center: Opened in 2002, this 40,000 square foot facility houses a studio, lab and faculty space.
  • The Imaging Theater: Opened in 2004, this 10,000 square foot space comes complete with 80, fully equipped digital imaging workstations.
  • Leaf Aptus 22-megapixel digital camera backs: These are provided to students for use during their 10-month experience at Hallmark Institute of Photography. 
  • A commercial shooting area: Specifically designed to accommodate everything from commercial shoots to portraits, this space features 16 commercial alcoves and three large portrait rooms (that can be divided into nine smaller, individual spaces).  Each is equipped with professional lighting systems and technology to allow students to complete any photographic project.

Beyond the Classroom Walls

Nestled in the Berkshire Mountains of Western New England, students attending Hallmark Institute of Photography enjoy the rich social and cultural benefits of being part of a larger academic community through its close proximity to Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, Williams College, and The University of Massachusetts.

The surrounding area filled with opportunities for outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, boating, camping and fishing--and of course--outdoor photography. On campus, students have access to the school store or they can enjoy a WiFi-equipped, 6,000 square-foot student lounge that offers snack options, lockers and computer access.
