Permission to Think!

Great Thinkers

(1879-1955)

As a boy, Einstein was fascinated by a compass, leading him to think about geometry and mathematics.

Permission to Think Like a Genius
Ok, so Einstein was a genius . . . how can most of us compare to him? Most experts agree his I.Q. was well above 160, the point of genius.

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer. pixel.gif But Einstein credited much of his discoveries to the permission to think, when he said, "the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge."1 Einstein's permission to fantasize-along with a lot of study and hard work-gave our world new definitions of gravity, time, space, and physics. All of those have huge impact on modern science.

Albert Einstein's path to becoming a Great Thinker:

- As a boy, Einstein was fascinated by a compass, leading him to think about geometry and mathematics. Sometimes a simple thing can prove to be very important in learning!
- Taught himself geometry at age 12
- Einstein failed early school entrance exam because of language and culture sections, while excelling at sciences-proof that traditional school tests don't always show how you'll do in life!
- Self-driven to learn about sciences. Much of what he learned was through studying on his own.
- Often skipped class to study independently.
- Loved music, trained violinist. Often said that if he weren't a scientist, he would have become a musician. Also loved sailing and the arts
- Studied physics in university, but then couldn't find teaching job. Took ordinary job in Swiss patent office. During that time Einstein continued advancing his education! Eventually earned PhD. Gained a teaching post at the University of Zurich.
- Eventually earned PhD.
- Einstein knew what he was good at (Math, scientific thinking) and never gave up.
- Einstein's famous theories of relativity, time, the speed of light, the existence of photons, and much more were considered radical, but have proven to be true. Much modern science, is possible because of his theories.
- Recipient of Nobel Prize in physics, 1921.
- Spent the later years of his life really thinking, as a theoretical physicist at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Give yourself permission to think! Ask yourself these questions . . .
