Study for a Master of Science in Education

A master of science in education typically is pursued by educators who need continued education to stay current on trends and techniques in education. Other master of education students focus on an education specialty such as counseling or educational administration.

Teachers who earn a master of science in education may continue to teach in the classroom. Depending on the specialization they pursue, some master of science in education majors become a school counselor or administrator.

Students are required to have a bachelor's degree before pursuing a master of science in education. Some schools require that the student have prior experience as a classroom teacher. Courses in educational psychology, school administration, and classroom techniques often are required for a master of science in education.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that elementary school teachers earned $45,670 in 2004. Secondary school teachers earned $48,420, while education administrators took home an estimated $71,640. Teachers and administrators are predicted to see an increase in available jobs between 2002 and 2012, according to the BLS. Administrators are expected to see a 20% to 25% growth, and elementary school teachers will likely see a growth of 13.4%. Secondary school teachers are predicted to see an increase of 17.3% for jobs in their field.
