How to Overcome Test Anxiety

  1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! This is simple. Don't go into a test without knowing the material. Exam taking is a stressful situation in itself, and it will only be worse if you aren't prepared. Study hard so you can take your test with confidence.
  2. Be Fair with Yourself: If you're preparing for an exam in a class that you know has been hard for you, don't have unrealistic expectations. If you work hard for Bs in chemistry, don't set yourself up for failure by only being happy with an A on the test.
  3. Join a Study Group: It always feels better to be part of a group than to be all alone. A study group can help relieve anxiety by allowing you to discuss your worries with others and will help you to better prepare yourself for the test material.
  4. Stay Relaxed. Don't go into a test a nervous wreck. Get a good night's sleep before the test. Listen to relaxing music on the way to the exam. Treat yourself to a healthy breakfast rather than a pot of coffee with sugar.
  5. Keep the Test in Perspective. This test may be one-third of your final grade, but in the greater scheme of your life, it may not carry quite as much weight. Don't turn test taking into a life-altering drama. Focus on studying thoroughly and doing your best.
