Nontransferrable online school credits: Plan ahead for success

By Jill Paugys

Question

I am signed up with an online school and their handbook says that their credits cannot be transferred to other universities. I am 53 years old and do not know a lot about online schools. What if I wanted to get a bachelor's degree later from another school? Does that mean my current school can prevent me from transferring credits?

Answer

Wow, I applaud your ambition and the efforts you have taken to return to school. I am also happy to hear that you have signed up with an online school. Distance learning is a great way to earn an online bachelor's degree and simultaneously hold a full-time job. It is an ideal situation for working professionals because of the convenience that comes from attending classes from your home computer. Flexible scheduling is one major reason those who are returning to school later in life choose online education.

Transferring credits between different colleges and universities can be a tricky thing. It becomes increasingly tricky if you are hoping to transfer credits between an online education school and an on-campus university. All institutions have different policies about transferring credits and often times schools handle these situations by looking at the individual circumstances. It is best to speak with someone at your current school to have all of your questions answered and to understand their policies before making any other decisions about your education. If you have another school in mind, one that you were hoping to attend later, I recommend speaking with an admissions advisor there as well.

If a bachelor's degree is your ultimate goal, have you considered earning an online bachelor's degree from the school where you are currently enrolled? This is the surest way to know that all of your courses and credits will be counted.
