Completing Your Computer Science Degree from Overseas

By Melody Gough

Question

I started a degree in computer science in America in 1999, but I had to return to my home country in Africa for family commitments. How can I complete the degree I started, even if I cannot travel back to the United States?

Answer

It sounds like you're craving one of the many international jobs available to graduates of computer science degree programs. And the time has never been better to complete your degree.

Plenty of online degree programs let you attend class from anywhere in the world. You just need a reasonably fast computer and reliable Internet access. Start by checking with the school where you first studied. They may now offer online courses, and a sympathetic professor may even help you earn credit hours based on your work experience.

If your previous school does not yet offer online degree programs, investigate some other online colleges that would be willing to accept all or some of your existing credit hours as transfer credits. Most colleges and universities will usually allow you to transfer up to half of the credits you need to graduate from another school. Before long, you should be able to find a school that can help you earn the degree that you need to advance your career.
