Online Aviation Technology Courses

By Melody Gough

Question

I would like to study Aviation Technology online. Is this a possibility?

Answer

Aviation Technology is a field of study with many areas of specialization. What are your ultimate goals as far as your education? Is this strictly for personal interest or do you want to repair planes? Perhaps you want to specialize in servicing specific parts of an aircraft? Take advantage of any local knowledge by first seeing if any people in this field are willing to speak with you about career possibilities. Did any of these people now employed in the industry complete some courses online?

Some programs offer students a chance to study theory online, but you traditionally need the hands-on training to put that theory to use. Many online programs include internships or practica as part of their curriculum. Even if you want to inspect rather than repair aircraft, it's imperative to have that foundation of technical knowledge. Talk to schools offering online instruction and ask if it's possible to set up the hands-on learning at a facility near you. That way you can complete necessary coursework at your own pace and get the chance to put the learning to practical use by applying that knowledge to working on actual aircraft parts.
