Putting military credits toward an information technology degree

By Jill Paugys

Question

How can I find schools that accept military credits for an IT degree?

Answer

A degree in information technology is a great choice for the current and projected job market. The field is growing rapidly and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in computer network, systems, and database administration are expected to increase by 30 percent between 2008-2018. The rate is much faster than the national average for all occupations and there will most likely be a steady demand for trained workers in this field.

It is great to hear that you have completed some courses and have military credits already. Every college and university has different policies regarding credit transferring. The amount of credits you can transfer will solely depend on the school you choose to attend and its guidelines.

Where do you go from here? First, I recommend you obtain official transcripts that document your completed courses, grades and credit hours. Next, decide which schools you are interested in attending. Both on campus and online universities offer options for a degree in information technology and you can choose from associate's, bachelor's, master's and PhD degree programs.

After you decide on an institution and a program, or at least have it narrowed down to a few choices, I recommend scheduling an appointment to meet with an enrollment counselor at each school you are interested in. The counselors will be able to tell you specific details about transferring your credits and can then tell you exactly what classes you will still need to take to complete your IT degree.
