Scholarships for International Students
By Melody GoughQuestion
I am from the Philippines. I am a graduate of business school and have a master's degree in development management. I know that further education will enable me to be of help to my countrymen. I am interested in pursuing further studies in the USA if a scholarship becomes available. How do I find available scholarships for non-Americans in the USA?
Answer
Before looking into financial aid, investigate ways that you can cut your college expenses. You can reduce your travel and lodging costs by completing at least a portion of your degree program online. A growing number of colleges and universities are opening their virtual doors to students from all over the world.
Some online colleges allow you to download lectures for free. While these classes won't count toward an online degree, you can still get a feel for the American style of education. Other programs let you start your degree online in your home country, then finish up with a shorter period of study on campus.
To help pay for your tuition, I have two suggestions. First, you can find a U.S. employer to sponsor your education in exchange for signing an employment contract. While you'll generally find this offer from employers seeking computer engineers and other technical staff, overseas recruiting is a common way that international students can earn finance their educations.
In addition, check with your home country's embassy in the United States. Foreign ambassadors and their staffs often know about scholarships and contests sponsored by trade associations, businesses, and private families. These scholarships are usually set up to help promote education and entrepreneurialism in the sponsors' home countries. Good luck with your scholarship search!
