Your HVAC & Refrigeration Career Options

By Melody Gough

Question

I recently started working for an ice-skating facility and have become interested in ice making and refrigeration. Could you please tell me how I could turn this newfound interest into a career? I have limited financing and want to know if free courses are available.

Answer

Take the first step by talking to employers and fellow employees about ice making and refrigeration. Where did they acquire all of their knowledge and expertise? Is there a way to become an apprentice and therefore learn more about the trade? When you display this drive, your employers may take the time to teach you additional technical details of the position. Don't be afraid to approach them with questions. If someone is simply too busy to answer, they might point you in the direction of someone who can.

As far as online classes go, programs in refrigeration are available. See if your employer offers any sort of tuition reimbursement. Also, talk to potential schools and ask what sort of assistance they provide. HVAC certification could get you on the fast track to a rewarding career. Good luck!
