Career Options for Foreign Nurses in the United States

By Melody Gough

Question

I am a registered nurse from England, but I specialized in Learning Disabilities. After moving to New York, I sent my credentials to the New York State Board who did not recognize my credentials. I am currently training to be a Nursing Assistant, but I really want to get my Registered Nursing status here. The Commission for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is now evaluating my credentials and informed me I should have applied for the LPN. I am frustrated and don't know where to turn to resume my career in nursing.

Answer

Training for a career you are passionate about and then being told your degree isn't acknowledged is something I can't even imagine. I applaud your resolve to do what it takes to once again achieve registered nurse status. It isn't mentioned in your letter how long the CGFNS has been reviewing your credentials. This is a nonprofit organization that is here to help people going through this exact sort of thing, so contacting them is a logical step in this process.

As a foreign nurse in the United States with your experience, you are indeed overqualified to start over as a nursing assistant. An LPN position utilizes many more of your skills. Make some phone calls and find out how the review of your credentials is going. After you find out where you stand, an online program in nursing might be an option for you. Check to see if the RN to BSN option includes foreign nursing credentials. If there is a nursing program at a local campus, schedule an appointment with an academic advisor and bring any documentation you have including degrees, schools attended, and classes completed. Take a proactive approach and get back to the career that drives you.
