DETC vs. regionally-accredited schools: What's the difference?

Answer
A growing number of people are earning online degrees today, especially professionals who are already in the work force and looking to go back to school to earn an advanced degree. They are in need of a program with more flexibility and convenience to fit into their busy lifestyle, so they turn to distance learning.
That being said, your concern with accreditation is a valid one and I'm happy to hear that you have it on your radar. Accreditation is important when looking at an online psychology degree program and I hope to clarify some of your uncertainties.
One of the best things you can do when looking into an online psychology degree program is to be sure that the program is listed in the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs. In the future potential employers, clients, or state licensure officials may look to check that the program or courses you completed were through an accredited institution. Typically, if the U.S. Department of Education recognizes the program, the program is viewed as creditable by others.
If it is not possible for you to complete your online psychology degree from one institution, and you anticipate that you will be need to transfer some credits, I suggest you speak with a guidance counselor from the institutions you are interested in to check their policy on the matter. Each school has their own set guidelines and regulations. Best of luck as you work towards a PhD in psychology.
