Enrolling in a Counseling PhD Program
By Melody GoughQuestion
I have an A.A. degree in fashion design, a B.A. in liberal arts and science, and a master's degree in counseling/psychology. I like the thought of building self-esteem in women. How can I pursue a worthwhile doctoral degree that combines my passions and furthers my education?
Answer
Wow! I applaud your desire for knowledge and your list of accomplishments. It sounds like a doctoral degree is indeed the next logical step for you. Since you've completed a master's degree in counseling, I would start thinking about applying for a counseling PhD program. You can work toward the area of concentration you want in the future. It sounds like a focus on assisting women is where your heart lies, and this specialization could provide the opportunity.
Start by scheduling an appointment with an academic advisor at your local campus. Explain exactly what interests you about the counseling profession. Do you want to counsel battered women? Perhaps you want to work with girls plagued by the stresses of self-esteem and peer pressure? An advisor can start you down the right path with information about necessary educational requirements.
Ask about volunteering opportunities in specific fields focused on assisting women. Be proactive and contact a counselor working in an area that interests you to see if it's possible to ask a few questions about this particular branch of counseling. Start the process in motion so you can start making a difference in your community.
