Catching Up in Math
March 12, 2008
Dear Professor Gough,
I need to learn more about math. When I was on spring break, I spent my time doing other things, so now I really need the extra help.
Dear Math Learner,
Your desire to learn more about math can only benefit you in your future career pursuits. Whether you are brushing up to help you prepare for college courses, to make yourself more marketable in the job world, or to figure out a budget, it's always a great idea to keep skills sharp. Many careers, such as accounting, medicine, architecture, and engineering rely on math skills. There are many options for enhancing your math skills. The path you choose depends on what type of learning you prefer. If studying in the privacy of your own home appeals to you, online learning is one possible direction. This type of environment may prove less intimidating, because a teacher isn't looking at you waiting for an answer. If you prefer classroom learning, a community college may be the best choice. Community colleges often have a variety of math classes open to all ages, and don't require students to commit to a degree program. Finally, if you are in college or high school and don't have a lot of money to spend on additional classes and books, you might do well to see if there is an available tutoring center on your campus. These centers may offer tutoring for free, or for a reasonable fee. Also, contact teachers in the math department and ask if they can recommend other students willing to tutor you.
