Getting an Architecture Degree

By Melody Gough

Question

I recently got my GED and am planning to enroll in college soon. I am very interested in architecture and would like to learn more about the different options I have in that field. Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer

Congratulations on earning your GED! Are you interested in constructing buildings like hospitals or homes, designing interior spaces for office buildings, or perhaps creating lush landscapes? Architecture is a vast umbrella that covers many areas of specialization. Designing structures such as houses, offices, and the like, requires at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Find a reputable school with qualified instructors who have both education and experience in the architectural field.

Interior architecture and landscape architecture are popular fields for online students. Once again, look for accredited programs before committing to anything. If interior design is your calling, apply for jobs at design centers and soak up all the knowledge you can. Get hands-on experience with fabrics, textures, and colors. Also, if landscaping is your passion, get a job at a nursery or somewhere else where you can observe and assist experienced landscapers. Ask questions, take notes, and learn everything you can from plant names to locations ideal for optimal growth.
