Online Entrepreneurship Degree Programs

Millions of people around the world dream of being their own boss, of striking out on their own, and of founding their own business. Entrepreneurship, the organizing, operating and assumption of risk of a new business venture, is the wellspring of innovation, the professional ambition of those who don't fit the corporate mold, and the way millions in the U.S., Canada, and beyond make their living. Often considered part of the "American Dream", owning one's own business is often the surest pathway to prosperity and career fulfillment.

What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? After all, most new businesses fail. Maybe, therefore, the determination to overcome initial failure (or failures) is necessary for eventual success; while many strike gold the first time around, most successful entrepreneurs must overcome several busts before hitting a win. Besides perseverance, personal characteristics often attributed to successful entrepreneurs are: leadership, independence, ambition (the "urge to build", according to David McClelland), future-orientation, passion, diligence, ingenuity and creativity, and hard work-as Thomas Edison famously quoted: "Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration."

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA):

  • entrepreneurs are major contributors to the economy: small businesses contribute more than half of the U.S.'s non-farm private sector gross domestic product (GDP)
  • entrepreneurs are major employers: small businesses generate 60-80% of all new jobs annually
  • entrepreneurs are innovators: small businesses produce 13 to 14 times more patents per employee than large patent-producing firms
Entrepreneurship degree programs are typically interdisciplinary in nature, and often include coursework in accounting, economics, communications, business ethics, business etiquette, finance, strategy, human resources management, and selling (sales). Many incorporate practical issues, such as payroll and benefits, business plan writing, budgeting, funding, recruiting and staffing, and use a "real world", case-based approach to instruction.
