Coaches earned an average annual salary of $21,260 in 2004, many working part-time at the high school level. At the college level, the average was $36,610. Earnings by physical education teachers are included with BLS reports of the average teaching salary, which ranged between $41,400 and $45,920 in the same year. This 33-credit hour specialization meets level five of the 1995 National Coaching Standards. Level five is the highest level of coaching or what one would consider a master coach. Central Washington University Central Washington University offers an online Masters of Science degree in Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies. The program is focused on K-12 physical education teaching. Many assignments require you to have access to teaching situations. If you are not currently teaching you will need to establish opportunities within K-12 settings to complete these assignments. Accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Eastern Oregon University Eastern Oregon University offers a distance learning Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health (Health Studies concentration only). The major requires 30 hours in the core and 30 more in the health studies concentration for a total major requirement of 60 credits. Coursework involves some Individualized Study, Computer Conferencing classes using FirstClass software, videos, and Web-based activities. Accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Emporia State University Emporia State University offers an online Master of Science in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The masters degree offered through the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Emporia State University is completed entirely through web based courses so that students do not have to travel to campus. This unique program is the only fully accredited online masters degree program in physical education in the United States. The program is accredited through North Central and is for students interested in advancing their education and opportunities in the areas of teaching, health promotion, coaching, and research. All courses are taught by faculty members with doctoral degrees who are nationally recognized in their fields. Emporia State University is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Mississippi State University Mississippi State University's Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport offers a distance learning Master of Science Program in Health Education/Health Promotion by videotape. This degree is designed for professionals interested in enhancing their skills in design, implementation, and evaluation of disease prevention and health promotion programs. Completion of the degree will help students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete the Certified Health Education Specialist examination. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. University of Houston University of Houston offers an online Master of Education in Physical Education. There are no thesis nor residency requirements. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. West Virginia University The School of Physical Education at West Virginia University offers the Master of Science degree in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) each summer. The 36 credit MS degree program has both on-site (18 credits) and distance education components. Participants spend two weeks each of three summers (18 credits) in West Virginia completing coursework and return home for the school year and take courses using web-based and internet-based delivery.
