Baking Culinary Decadence: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Cheesecake

By Wendy Croix

Cheesecake is the crowd-pleasing favorite of culinary dessert food. One bite of the moist, creamy cake and you are left to wonder: does baking get any better than this? When prepared properly, cheesecake astounds mouths with the bliss of culinary perfection. But don't be deceived: baking a cheesecake is no small feat and many who have attempted its have achieved dismal results. Don't fall prey to cheesecake mistakes!

Avoid Culinary Mishaps or You'll Get Door Stops Instead of Cheesecake

The common misconception is that if you simply follow the recipe for your New York Cheesecake, success will be yours. Unfortunately, this beloved delicacy is a fickle food to prepare. Watch out for these common baking blunders:

  • Over-baking: Your cheesecake won't actually appear to be done cooking, but will have a moist and unstable center that will solidify upon cooling. Unless you overbake it to a dry hard lump.
  • It's in the cheese: Use large blocks of cream cheese rather than spread; the latter won't produce proper texture.
  • Don't rush! Cooking should be at a slow, consistent temperature, but pay attention and remove before browning occurs.

Quell Your Fears of Cheesecake in Cooking School

Clearly, cheesecake is a food that tends to be more high maintenance than its floury cake counterparts. But don't give up on this culinary treasure just yet. Cooking school can settle all of your cheesecake concerns and introduce you to recipes and baking tips that will leave you fearless in the kitchen and ready for dessert.
