Crime Scene Technology and Investigation Degrees

St. Petersburg College
St. Petersburg College offers the following online programs in crime scene technology:

Associate of Science in Crime Scene Technology
Certificate in Crime Scene Technology

All individual courses on-line. During the last session of the program, students are required to attend a week-long, 40-hour Lab Review Techniques course, held at the SPC Allstate Center, St. Petersburg, Florida.

ARTICLE: Crime Scene Investigation In-Depth

A crime has been committed. You've dusted partial fingerprints from almost every surface and the now you've lifted one from human skin. Carefully you wrap each one in a cellophane envelope and then a steel box before sending them to your supervisor. The prints will reach the lab before you do. The crime lab professionals will run the partials through the an Automated Fingerprint Identification System for potential matches. If a match is found, you will expedite the evidence to identify one of the last people to touch the victim of this crime scene.

Collecting and processing physical evidence left at a crime scene often begins with earning a science degree in subjects such as biology, chemistry, forensic science, criminal justice or a related field. Some jurisdictions may require you be a sworn police officer before becoming a Crime Scene Investigator.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), annualized salaries for forensic scientists range from $20,000 to $40,000. Experienced crime lab professionals earn about $40,000 to $85,000 and some lab directors earn as much as $100,000.
