Employees working in corrections keep the public safe from criminals inside the correctional facility and ensure the safety of their wards.Workers in correctional facilities may be called wardens, correctional officers, correctional managers, or supervisors. Correctional officers usually work with the wards of the correctional facility. They inspect the facility and the prisoners for unauthorized materials and lead prisoners through their daily schedules. Managers and supervisors oversee the work of the correctional officers and other employees in the facility. They do much of the administrative work of the facility, including handling financial matters, probation and parole hearings, and facility upkeep. Introduction to corrections is a commonly required course for corrections majors. Courses on probation and parole are also usually required. Correctional officers earned an average income of $35,970 in 2004, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The same report showed that managers of correctional officers earned $34,480. Jobs for correctional officers and managers are expected to continue to grow.
