Esthetician Training in Eyebrow Design: The Base of a Beautiful Face

\Many people believe that the eyes are the most expressive part of the face. They may not realize that much of the actual non-verbal communicating is done with the eyebrows. Your eyebrow shape can create an instant impression about you. Therefore, eyebrow design is an intricate job requiring careful planning. There is not an abundance of hairs to tweeze or trim, and removing the wrong ones can create a completely different look than planned. Courses in beauty college or esthetician training teach students the detailed aspects of good eyebrow design and shaping.

Beauty School Lesson: Planning the Eyebrow Design

Beauty school teaches you that planning is the most important step in creating a well-groomed and expressive eyebrow design. Decide on a basic shape for the brows first. Achieve that shape using one or more eyebrow styling techniques:

  • Trim the brows as needed to remove excess length. This is done by up-combing the brow, then neatly and carefully trimming any hair length extending above the main shape. Professional eyebrow scissors are preferred by beauty college instructors, rather than hairdressing scissors or even the smaller nail scissors.
  • Use concealer or white eyebrow pencil to mark the hairs that will be removed, either by waxing or tweezing. Trying to remove hairs from memory often results in uneven brows for clients.
  • Stand close to the client and then further back to view the brows at different distances and angles and ensure that the big picture looks as neat as the close-up view.

Eyebrow stencils are not recommended, as they do not take into account the shape of your customer's face and particulars of his or her features. They are not foolproof, even in creating symmetrical brows, and can create a false sense of security for estheticians.

Beauty School Instructors Offer Eyebrow Shaping Tips

Once the planning stage is complete, begin your shaping procedures. Techniques and tips taught by many beauty school instructors include:

  • Apply numbing spray or a warm washcloth before starting to tweeze or wax, to help the hairs slide out more easily.
  • Don't be afraid to take hair off the top of the brows. Don't tweeze from the main shape at the top, but removing hairs to make the brow symmetrical is fine.
  • Hold the skin taut as you are tweezing to help minimize pain.

Face Shape Matters When Choosing an Eyebrow Design

A determining factor in eyebrow design should be based on your client's face shape. Following are some suggested eyebrow design guidelines for common face shapes:

  • Heart-shaped faces: Need a rounded brow to balance a pointed chin, and often need the peak of the arch softened.
  • Long faces: Should have a flat eyebrow, perhaps with added length applied with a brow pencil.
  • Square faces: Are best balanced with thinner, softly curved brows.
  • Round faces: Benefit with a strong peak toward the end of the eyebrow, and angular lines across it.
