The Value of Client Skin Care Education Starts with Beauty School

If you are a student in beauty school, and more specifically skin care school, then you already know how much clients matter to your professional success. As part of esthetician training, you learn how to provide your clients with a powerful weapon against skin disease, sun damage, and premature aging: skin care education. Most skin care professionals provide some client education, particularly when seeing a client for the first time; however, depending on the services you provide and where you work, the amount of information you provide can vary.

Why Client Education Matters to the Esthetician

Beauty school students learn about critical information that is needed from every new client seeking skin care services:

  • How the client feels about his or her skin
  • Medications and medical or nutritional issues
  • The type of skin care products and care routine currently being used

Many estheticians simply use client information to determine the appropriate type of service for a client, particularly if they work in an establishment where they are not building a clientele, such as a resort spa or a cruise ship. However, if you are building repeat business, you definitely want to educate your clients and build lasting relationships with them. It is part of your job to help your clients understand how particular lifestyle choices, medical issues, and products affect their skin, what you can do to help, and what they can do differently at home.

When your clients' skin looks great, they not only come back to you, but they tell all their friends about your services, as well.

Keep Providing Esthetician Expertise

The continuing education you provide to clients largely depends on their skin type, any symptoms they are experiencing, and what service you are providing. Clients with acne, for example, may initially need education on why popping a pustule creates others and how to establish an at-home care regimen to combat acne. Female acne clients may need education on make-up techniques to minimize the appearance of acne and scarring.

If you plan each session to include a bit of skin care school for clients, they start to see you as a trusted advisor, providing the best, most up-to-date information for them as their skin care needs change.

Client Education: Ongoing Esthetician Training

While you attend beauty school esthetician training courses, you learn a lot of skin care theory and techniques. However, your training does not end there. As clients continue to come to you for advice, you can find continued inspiration and a constant renewal of that spirit that brought you to the field in the first place--to help others get healthier skin and feel better about their appearance. With that mission in mind, it is easy to stay motivated to find out the latest information on skin care products and developments, so you can better serve them and advance in your career.
