Botox(r) and Dermal Filler Injections: When Esthetician Services Are Not Enough

As part of beauty school training, estheticians learn about skin care treatments and non-invasive procedures that can offer dramatic cosmetic results. These services include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, LED light therapy, and more. In addition, students learn about working together with medical personnel to achieve results that further satisfy and are appropriate for each patient. A good esthetician knows about the cosmetic procedures available at medical spas and dermatology offices. For example, estheticians should have information for clients about Botox(r) and dermal fillers; however, they must refer the clients to qualified medical personnel to perform the procedures.

What are Botox(r) & Dermal Fillers?

Botox(r) is the cosmetic name for the botulinum toxin that, when injected under the skin, temporarily eliminates frown lines, crow's feet, forehead creases, and other facial lines. The muscles of the face that cause the wrinkles are temporarily paralyzed by the toxin, which makes the skin appear smooth. Botox(r) can be used together with dermal fillers for longer-lasting results.

Dermal fillers, or soft tissue fillers, are substances injected into the skin that plump up or fill in the areas of the face where aging has caused fat stores to deteriorate. Dermal fillers also can be used to reduce facial scarring from injuries or acne. A variety of dermal fillers are available, which helps to expand the number of service offerings in medi-spas and doctors' offices. Each filler presents unique features and benefits. Dermal fillers include:

  • Collagen: Bovine collagen has been used for almost 20 years, but human-derived collagen is available, as well.
  • Hyaluronic acid: Like the hyaluronic acid that makes up human skin, several types of this acid are available. It can be used to plump up lips and fill hollow areas of the face.
  • Autologous fat: The patient's own fat, which has been removed by mini-liposuction from other parts of the body, can be injected into the face.

Botox(r) and dermal filler treatments are the top two cosmetic procedures in the market, according to the National Laser Institute. In 2007, over 4 million of these cosmetic injectable treatments were performed.

Who Can Give Botox(r) & Dermal Filler Injections?

Medical estheticians cannot perform these treatments. Both Botox(r) and dermal fillers must be injected, so only qualified health professionals are allowed to perform them. If you are a doctor, nurse, or certified medical assistant, you are likely eligible to attend accredited training and become authorized to offer these services.

Though programs vary, usually each type of training can be completed in a one-day intensive learning session. Some training centers combine the two treatments into one class, so be sure to research your area offerings to find a training curriculum that best suits your needs.
